driving out to the middle of nowhere...

in alaska...

saw a moose on the way...

in the middle of the road...

didn't get a photo.

i hate moose as much as i hate whales now.

*exhale*

i mean, yeah it's cool seeing wild creatures...

but i don't care to hang around them for more than a few seconds.

anyway, nature gave me a light show...

it's actually not as vibrant to the naked eye as it is captured with a camera.

it's like a milky hue in the sky...

whisks of light...

like streaks of clouds...

wasn't so green...

but still amazing & beautiful.

probably would have been more vivid if the moon wasn't full.

photos may be a little blurry.

didn't have my tripod.

also, didn't really take my time.

darkness + wilderness + wild animals = no thanks

long exposures are fun nonetheless.

definitely something every photographer should experience.

just one of the reasons why photography is so great...

sure, my 5d is awesome. crisp. clear.

i just miss that grain & color saturation of film.
& i feel like i've been losing discipline.

i know i can mess around with the settings on my digital slr & manipulate my images to get that film look...

but i really dislike editing.

usually don't.

not trying to sound pretentious or whatever...
i'm lazy.
& i don't really care to change the image into something else than what it originally was.
of course, sometimes editing & design can be fun...
but for the most part...

i just like to shoot. take what i capture. it is what it is.
keep it simple.

i like the high resolution of digital.
i like the unlimited amount of careless shots with it.

but...

i like the honesty of film.

i like the anticipation.

and the shutter release sounds so much better on my elan... *quiver* :3

i'm not very pretentious when it comes to art (or anything really)... i don't really know anything about anything... all i know is that i like what i like and sometimes that's good enough for me. so here, now... i share some of their works that i like and brings me joy...

i got a couple of postcards from the ica in boston (when i used to live in cambridge... briefly) of JAN VON HOLLEBEN's photographs. recently, a friend of mine posted links to his images on twitter and i was reminded to look more into this photographer's work. i love his eye and style of shooting... how he sets up a scene and creates an illusion... his angles and use of space... i admire his imagination. i especially love his "DREAMS OF FLYING" series (which the postcards i have are from) and "JOURNEY TO EVERYWHERE". so rad and amazing...

"journey to everywhere" reminds me of this photo i took in high school...

oh man, i used to have my little olympus + film on me often or even my sony hi8 camcorder somedays. eesh. film nerd. meh. whatever. i captured some fucking awesome moments.

ugh, now i want to do a series of miniature people and giant items... a stop motion maybe... or both! ugh... i'm so behind...

so... a week or two ago, i was walking downtown with some friends and came across this painting in the window at bethel street gallery at mark's garage...

it caught my eye. i stopped. stared. yelled at my friends to look. sms-ed a couple of people this photo. i felt that i needed it. really needed it. it just brought so much happiness to me instantly. probably because of the BEES which triggered a funny memory. then my eyes wandered at the rest of the display and all the painting were wonderful. i typed the artist's name into my shitty g1 and made sure to check up on JOHANNA WRIGHT on the interwebs. so fucking awesome. i love the storybook type of art that reflects a kind of innocence and calm. i hear folk music...

came across a shoebox that was full of polaroids... hundreds... (shown below) and i was kind of amazed... and that's not even all of them...

limited edition quarter holder pendant from the 60s w/ 24k gold chain that i got off of SNOOZER LOSER. it holds $2 worth of quarters... shiiiiet...

i'm kind of in love with it.
it's pretty nifty.
now when people ask me for a quarter -- b/c it happens all of the time (sarcasm) -- i'll have it on hand...
now i can utilize pay phones & meter parking...
and gumball & toy machines...
soda vending machines...
snacks...

went to bishop museum this past saturday for IF NOT NOW WHEN art & music festival coordinated by ara. it was a success. congratulations araaa!
FINALLY got a hold of the current issue FLUX magazine that has the MANIFEST ADS i did featuring mahina & john. lisa had a tent up & korean traditional outfits to wear...

how do the simplest things -- like a fresh coat of nail color & a new ring -- brighten up a shitty week? come to think of it, things aren't so bad actually. good friends, good food, good music, good times -- the past few days have been pretty awesome as a matter of fact. i don't know why i tend to be cynical & pessimistic. mrrr... something i need to work on i guess. yes. yes, i do.

i really really like personal mail. it's one of my favorite things ever. sending it, receiving it... whatever. stamps, stationary, packaging, writing, drawing... the idea of something traveling places... connection... communication... i think it's just one of the greatest & most meaningful forms of human interaction.

so i got items in the mail today... max is AMAAAZING and has a HUGE HEART, always contributing to some cause. he recently chopped his hair off for locks of love. he's one of the most enthusiastic, optimistic, encouraging, supportive people i've ever met -- very open minded & cultured.

this past wednesday i had an appointment with my lovely lovely friend MANDY GARCIA of SOUL SIGNATURE TATTOO. her other half was calling me a traitor the whole time... her other half = LUCKY OLELO = my chest piece and roses. i like mandy's writing & i wanted a feminine touch to this piece. plus, she's my friend & the love of my tattoo artist, so i wanted to support & pay that respect to her. it was a fun time, reenacting that one youtube video of the girl screaming/crying while getting her first tattoo and just being awkward & dumb. mandy's adorable. love her!

i remember when hard candy nail color was sold at macy's or liberty house, whatever... and was 12 bucks a pop. a mother buying her 10 year old daughter 12 dollar nail color in 5 different colors. spoiled? nah...

now they're sold at wal-mart for $5 a piece & still come with those plastic rings...
